Vocabulary game

Posted by Rebecca Laurent on January 28, 2010 at 12:09 AM

Here is a cool vocabulary game I have fun playing. They say for each answer you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice though the World Food Program. So lets feed those people while proofing how smart we are or at least get a few laughs at ourselves.

What is HAP?

Posted by Rebecca Laurent on January 27, 2010 at 10:09 PM Comments comments (0)

HAP - is a support system for all homeschooled students and parent support groups in Brazoria County. Local support and community groups use HAP e-mailing as an outreach tool to disseminate desired information (community service projects, field trips, workshops, yearly class programs and others of the like) to ensure that the homeschooled family in Brazoria County be informed.

To receive announcements, simply e-mail [email protected] with ‘add me’ in the subject line.

In addition, annual standardized testing (Stanford/Olsat), Spelling Bees, Reading Clubs, (Book It & Read to Succeed), THSC, HSLDA and SETHSA support, community service projects, a shared library, Student & Teacher photo ID’s, and other events are offered. There are no monthly meetings or member fees; however some programs associated may have a nominal fee and/or other requirements for participation.

Brazosport Area Home School Graduation: This Committee is dedicated solely to serving the interests of the home schooled graduates of the Brazosport Area and their families, honoring their years of hard work and dedication. This committee began its formation in 1997 in a spirit of unity and practicality to uphold the high standards and integrity of the Home Schooling Educational Choice. While this committee holds to Christian values and strives to honor Christ in all things, we welcome and invite all area home schooled students meeting the basic graduation requirements to participate in this memorable event. Graduation information is sent out via e-mail from HAP and local support groups at the beginning of each school year. An Ice Cream Social is planned each August with the Graduation Ceremony held in May.

The participation of parents and graduates in accomplishing the many details is the key factor to a successful event. We look forward to meeting you and working together with you as we bring the homeschooling community together for this important celebration.

H.I.S – Homeschool Instructional Support is a co-operative effort among parents to provide classes that meet once a week for the purpose of providing instruction in core subject areas as well as supplementary and elective areas. The program has been in existence since 2005. Currently the classes meet at Hope Fellowship Church in Lake Jackson on Thursdays from August through May. Assisting families with high school course requirements was the main reason this co-op was developed. Classes for all ages have always been part of the program to assist teachers and families in areas where they are less confident. Many families have stated that the classes have met an academic need, provided social opportunities, and helped in meeting transcript requirements. Registration is required to take part in the classes. Fees are collected, and supply / copy costs and curriculum may be required to take part in the classes. Registration for the classes takes place in the summer for the fall classes, and in November-December for the spring classes. At this time, there are no mid-semester registrations. Teaching is not required in order for your family to participate.

MAFA-Master’s Academy of Fine Arts provides a framework for all studies by teaching music, art, drama and history within the context of the six historical time periods of the program. This basic exposure program uses a hands-on approach to learning allowing students to experience life throughout history by participating in activities related to each area of study.

MI - Master’s Institute Classes are designed to give deeper levels of study in the arts and other areas of study not covered by the MAFA exposure program such as science, photography and robotics. All MI classes are open to families that are not enrolled in MAFA.

MAFA classes are available for ages 5-18. Enrollment is open to all home school families. For more information or to enroll go to

Classes are open for enrollment now for 2009-2010. The school program will cover the Medieval/Renaissance time period. Tuition maybe paid out in seven monthly installments.

Sports Day - is a program run by parents of Family Learning Co-Op and is open to all homeschoolers in southeast Brazoria County ages five and older. It allows students to participate in sports-related activities. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month (with exceptions in November & December) from 12:45 to 3:00. Students are grouped into five groups, based on age, and led by parent volunteers (Freshmen 5-6, Sophomores 7-8, Juniors 9-10, Seniors 11-12, Teens 13+). During break time, snacks may be purchased from Sports Day or brought from home.

The registration fee is $15 per family for the entire year. Additionally, each child must have a Sports Day T-shirt, which can be purchased new for $12.00 (we use the same style shirt every year so the shirts can be reused or handed down). Each family is required to fill out an Information Form/Medical Release upon registration. At each event there is an activity fee per child: $2.00 if parent stays and volunteers, $3.00 if parent drops-off. Occasionally, we offer free days to parents who volunteer ahead of time in a specific capacity. You can purchase snacks at the following costs: Snack-$.50, Cola-$.50, Drink-$.25 (water, Gatorade, juice).
